Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
