Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like typical body horror, but within Together resides a deep meditation about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative begins when the couple transition from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
