The platform is rolling out a fresh option that allows them to cut down on the amount of AI-created videos appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the service disclosed that it currently hosts in excess of 1 bn AI videos.
Pilot Phase and Launch
The new functionality is being tested over the next few weeks before a full-scale launch. This shift comes amid a rise in content created by AI, spurred by emerging AI video creators.
AI Content on Other Platforms
It has been noted that approximately 10% of the most rapidly expanding content creators on another major platform only show clips produced artificially. A significant portion of this content is classified as mass-produced AI material, a term for poor-quality, mass-produced content that is typically nonsensical or bizarre.
“We know from our community that a lot of users like content produced via AI tools, from digital art to science explainers, and we intend to offer the community the power to increase or decrease of that, depending on their own likes,” stated a spokesperson.
Scale of AI Content
The service disclosed that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its network identified as AI-generated. In total, in excess of 100 mn pieces of content are added to the service every day, making AI content a limited percentage of its complete catalog.
How to Adjust Settings
Viewers will be in a position to reduce or increase the level of AI content they watch by opening the “manage topic” option in the platform and choosing the AI content topic. Further subjects that can already be controlled under the filter encompass politics, style, cosmetics, and movement.
Platform Guidelines
Its policies require users to tag lifelike AI-generated content, and it prohibits harmful deepfakes of well-known individuals or critical incidents. Any realistic artificial content that is without a tag can be taken down under its terms of service.
In addition, the app will henceforth attach an artificially created tag to content made using its own AI tools, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing content made by AI. This action is aimed to help prevent users from attempting to bypass the labeling process.
Responsible AI Funding
The company is furthermore launching a $2 million educational fund for specialists and organizations to produce learning resources about ethical AI use. This project will support educational bodies focused on teaching computer science.
Moderation Strategy
The video-sharing app has supported its content review process, following discussion over intentions to make redundant hundreds of review team members in the UK. TikTok is planning to eliminate hundreds of positions in its user protection team in London, with trade unions and internet security professionals voicing alarm that people are being substituted by AI moderation.
A company official clarified that people-led review would still have a role, but AI can shield workers by eliminating the most graphic content before it gets reviewed by staff. TikTok stated a significant reduction in disturbing and violent content seen by human moderators over the previous year due to intervention by its machine learning processes.
“We think that it’s essential to integrate humans and technology to maintain a secure environment,” the executive stated. “We’ll have people as integral to the approach, but we also think it’s highly necessary to limit contact with dangerous material as swiftly, which is why a significant AI assistance is making a difference work at speed.”
