Each time a major prize-giving event draws close, you'll find an outcry to include additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and fill the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
