The anticipation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team could be crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it kicked off the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities you can achieve with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, letting players to improvise both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to a new entry in this legendary franchise.
