EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
