Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of access tunnels down to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of British forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey said. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, following an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
